Film crew discovers building transplanted from Big Island to Nagoya, Japan

An excellent day of filming B roll and cover shots at Meiji Mura open air museum – filmed important Meiji era buildings, including the Japanese Immigrants’ Assembly Hall built in Hilo in 1889. Yes, that’s right – this building was first used as a church by the early Japanese immigrants in East Hawaii on the Big Island and then as a meeting facility. It was taken apart and then rebuilt at the museum in Nagoya in 1969. What a treasure! Thanks to Dr. Erika Hori of Nagoya University who drove us to the site. She was the recipient of the prestigious Crown Prince Akihito award and studied at the University of Hawaii at Manoa while completing her PhD on Katsu Goto. Beautiful site with so many historic buildings of the Meiji period 1868-1912.
